Funeral Planning in East Tucson AZ - Guru Guide

Overview: East Tucson AZ

As the second largest city in Arizona, Tucson has a wide has a very mixed population. Home to the University of Arizona, this city attracts those attending, working at, or simply enjoying the perks of the University. The abnormally warm weather also attracts an older population looking to either have a second home here or make Tuscon their permanent residence after retirement. The Eastern part of Tucson is the newest area and it is known primarily for its modern commercial and residential developments and upscale restaurants and entertainment areas. Tucson residents are primarily Christian but as it becomes more diverse, this is slowly changing. Nonetheless, funeral homes reflect this and most are Christian based but more than happy to accommodate all faiths.

Funeral Homes

If you plan to have a traditional funeral in Tucson with the body present (regardless of whether you choose burial or cremation) you must work with a funeral home to make your arrangements. As mentioned earlier, this area is predominately Christian but most all funerals homes will happily accommodate all religions.

Crematories

Normally, I would list direct cremation companies here. However, as mentioned above, because funeral homes in Tucson can have crematories on site, there is not a separate “direct cremation” company. These are funeral homes that offer very reasonably priced cremations.

Cemeteries

You will work directly with the cemetery to arrange for a plot and the burial, but many of the details like buying a casket and body transportation will be coordinated by the funeral home you choose. Note: Some of these cemeteries have funeral homes on the premises.

EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY

5801 East Grant Road
Tucson, AZ 85712
520-885-6741
www.eastlawnpalmsmortuary.com

This is a nice SCI-owned funeral home in a lovely part of Tucson. They are a “one stop shop” with a mortuary, a cemetery, and use of a crematory; the ease and convenience of this location is one of the main selling points. Another distinguishing aspect of East Lawn is priceless view of the mountains from the main chapel. For those who had this beautiful view everyday of life, it might be nice to have it at the end as well.

They also have a charming fully equipped kitchen and separate room set up to host catered events. Funeral Guru Tip: Be prepared to find lots of branded “Dignity” materials and items in every corner of the facility (including the bathroom.)

FUNERARIA DEL ANGEL

7 East University Boulevard
Tucson, AZ 85705

Although this SCI location seem plain and unassuming, it's really so much more! This wonderful, warm, and modern funeral home is special both inside and out. The grounds have lots of vegetation and ample parking. Once inside, guests will appreciate the beautiful stone floors, an all-new interior, a simple and dignified chapel, a complete kitchen, and the sitting area in their courtyard. If the building itself is not enough to win you over, the staff will! Everyone I encountered here was professional, compassionate, and kind. It might not be the most luxurious location, but it's a true gem.

ADAIR FUNERAL HOME

1050 North Dodge Boulevard
Tucson AZ 85716
(520) 326-4343
www.adairfuneralhomes.com

The Adair family has three funeral homes in Arizona; the Tucson location was their first and is still their flagship property. Occupying over 12,000 square feet, the interior of this location is a bit dated (with faux flowers all over), but still welcoming.

There is a serene 150-seat chapel with a lovely stain-glass wall. They also have their own resort on the premises. The staff is kind and very community-service oriented.

ANGEL VALLEY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION

2545 North Tucson Boulevard
Tucson, AZ 85716
(520) 327-6341
www.angelvalleyfuneralhome.com

This has been a family-owned funeral home since 1960 and caters predominantly to Christians. While the staff is compassionate, the funeral home itself is a bit threadbare. Shockingly, for a small funeral home, they have a vast selection of urns and other funeral paraphernalia. They have a coupon for direct cremation for $675, which they give to people going through hospice and also make available online (a welcome rarity in the industry); without the coupon it could cost hundreds more. They also have other offers like 15-percent off if you mention the website and 10-percent off of caskets. Funeral Guru Tip: If you love dogs, the owner has a few that might be able to pop in to cheer you up.

BRING FUNERAL HOME

236 South Scott Avenue
Tucson, AZ 85701
(520) 623-4718
www.bringfuneralhome.com

Bring has two funeral home locations in Tucson. The very modern website (featuring a video) even had me in tears. The personal touches throughout this funeral home make it cozy and special.

For example, there are portraits on the walls of the original owners, wallpaper in the bathroom with musical notes, and oriental carpets over the dark wood floors. They also have a lot of resources dedicated to grief support.

DESERT ROSE HEATHER MORTUARY CHAPEL

1040 North Columbus Blvd
Tucson, AZ 85711
(520) 322-6131
www.heathermortuary.com

This is the SCI-owned location is best for those opting for cremation. Although they can certainly handle burials, they specialize in cremations and do not have a full chapel on site. This shouldn't dissuade you. The location is spotlessly clean and the staff is kind, informed and professional.

HUDGEL SWAN FUNERAL HOME

1335 South Swan Road
Tucson AZ 85711
(520) 747-2525
www.hudgelswan.com

Family owned and operated since 1964 by two kind and knowledable brothers who come from a family of funeral directors. They have a warm and homey chapel which seats up to 100 people and two crematories on site. The location isn't fancy but still very cozy. They also have their pricelist online, which is very helpful.

Cemeteries

EAST LAWN PALMS CEMETERY

5801 East Grant Road
Tucson, AZ 85712
520-885-6741
www.eastlawnpalmsmortuary.com

Very few locations are able to offer as many special and personalized options as East Lawn Palms. The lush grounds, ponds, and beautiful landscaping set this SCI-owned cemetery apart from others in the area. Established in 1957, this location offers not only mausoleums (both classic and walk in), in ground options, and even a cremation garden. There is a separate garden for those of the Jewish faith who opt to be buried here.

EVERGREEN CEMETERY

3015 North Oracle Road
Tucson AZ 85705
(520) 888-7470
http://evergreenmortuary-cemetery.com

This “combination” location offers everything from a Serenity Mausoleum to a Chinese Memorial Garden. The helpful staff will go through all your options with you and even take you on a tour of the cemetery if you would like.

HOLY HOPE CEMETERY

3535 North Oracle Road
Tucson, AZ 85705
(520) 888-0860
www.dotcc.org
This Catholic cemetery is located in a lovely part of Tucson. The grounds are well maintained and it is no wonder why so many opt to make this their final resting place. There are many very religious statues on the property. If you are not comfortable with these, you might want to choose a non-denominational cemetery.

www.wyndham.com/westward-look-resort
This is one of the more luxurious hotels in the area. In an attempt to give guests a relaxing retreat, the entire hotel has been integrated into the natural surroundings. There is a gym, spa, and even horseback riding and hiking for those looking for a bit of an escape. Guru Tip: there is a $20 resort fee that will be added to the bill to cover parking, wi-fi, and gym use.

Restaurants

Needless to say there are numerous restaurants in Tucson. Here are just a few recommended options for venues close to the funeral homes that can accommodate a group. If you opt for a different restaurant, just be sure to call ahead and ask if they can hold a crowd your size; the restaurant might have a private room and/or special menu. Also, you might want to consider a favorite local restaurant or a deli such as Dakota Café to cater a gathering at your home another location. Guru Tip: In Tucson, funeral homes are allowed to serve food. Many of the funeral homes have separate reception areas and caterers that they recommend. For convenience purposes, this is certainly worth asking about!

Feast

Tucson, AZ 85716
(520) 326-9363
www.eatafeast.com
Customers frequently return to this favorite comfortable local restaurant. The menu is the same for both lunch and dinner and Feast offers catering options as well.

Flemings

(520) 529-5017
www.flemingssteakhouse.com
Don’t be turned off by the fact that this is a chain restaurant; instead, be happy that there is one in your area. This group has nearly mastered the upscale steakhouse dining. This location is convenient and there are multiple private dining rooms to fit from 20 guests up. All rooms are equipped with Cisco video conferencing systems. This could be particularly helpful if you would like to stream in guests who cannot make to it the meal or if you would like to show videos of your loved ones.

(520) 299-1600

Part of the Fox Concepts food group, this is a great choice for those who are looking for something slightly more modern, trendy and relaxed. They have multiple group dining options, offering anything from a small area in their main dining room to multiple different size private rooms to renting the entire space for a reception. It is worth noting that Fox Concepts has multiple locations in the area. Guru Tip: This restaurant is fabulous for a younger crowd but might be a bit too noisy for seniors.

Other Helpful Local Resources

1st Rate 2nd Hand Thrift Store

www.1strate2ndhand.com
The name says it all. This second hand store sells clothing, furniture, and so much more! Proceeds from this store go to multiple local charities. Goodwill
300 N 4th Street
Tucson, AZ 85705
(480) 745-3710
www.goodwillaz.org
Goodwill’s get mixed reviews, but this one is very highly ranked. Both those who are dropping off goods and those purchasing all say that the staff is beyond kind and helpful. It is a rather new store and it is still bright and clean, making the experience of both shopping and donating more enjoyable.

Humane Society of Southern Arizona Thrift Store
5311 E Speedway Blvd
Tucson, AZ 85712
(520) 327-0100
http://www.hssaz.org/site/PageServer?pagename=thrift_store
We, the Everplans staff, LOVE animals. Lucky for us, we can happily recommend this thrift store because it not only offers lots of merchandise at very reasonable prices, but also gives the proceeds to the our four-legged friends. They will accept donations of everything from clothing and furniture to jewelry and pet items. Guru Tip: Each day of the week they have different “$uper $pecial $avings” which are 50% off different types of goods each day of the week.

‘Til We Meet Again
1703 West Bethany Home Road
Suite D005
Phoenix, AZ 85015
(602) 242-6700
www.tilwemeetagainaz.com
Although we innately believe that malls sell everything, few of us were prepared for this store.  Pat Kerivan brilliantly opened this shop in the Phoenix Mall that offers unique caskets, urns, jewelry keepsakes, and pet keepsakes. Although the shock value was what got him the publicity, clients should realize that he is selling distinctive products that some point we will all need. Guru Tip: Don’t be scared! This store is worth checking out. We have seen plenty of caskets, but these are truly distinctive (and very reasonably priced).
